Frostbiting
Six races every Sunday, November through April.
FAQs
What do I wear?
Most sailors wear a drysuit or a wetsuit. A 5/4 wetsuit will get you through the coldest days of the season, but a 4/3 will work a majority of the time. A spray top over your wetsuit is a great way to combat the windchill. We recommend a warm beanie and neoprene boot liners. The hardest part of gear is gloves; 3mm neoprene gloves work well.
The most daunting part of frostbiting is staying warm, but once you figure out your kit you’ve got nothing to worry about.
When should I arrive?
The first race starts at 1pm sharp. We recommend arriving no later than 12pm to give yourself time to rig, get changed, and sail to the starting area.
What time does racing end?
There is no start after 3pm, which gives us a 2 hour window of racing. Typically this means we get 5-6 races in.
We strongly encourage everyone to come to the IYAC (local sports bar located at 536 Thames St, Newport) to enjoy post-racing pizza, warm chowder, and drinks. This is a great place to learn from fleet veterans who are always happy to answer questions.
Where do I go?
60 Fort Adams Drive. You’ll see a gravel parking area where everyone parks and gets ready. Folks generally get ready in their cars and out of their trunks.
How do I join?
You can register for the season on our Clubspot. We ask sailors to pay dues each season which go towards things like fleet boat maintenance, gas for race committee boats, and post-sailing pizza.
The student price (college students and younger) is $50 per season. Non-students pay $125 per season. There is a $75 fee if you store your boat at Sail Newport.
Do I have to sail every Sunday?
No, you can sail whenever you want.
How does the scoring work?
Each Sunday counts as its own day of racing. Usually 6 races, no drops. Your finish place on a day counts as a race in the season standings. Your worst 1/3rd season finishes are dropped.
Who can talk to if I have questions?
